Which swell pedal ?

Postby jpcaruana on March 7th, 2009, 2:55 pm

Hi,

I'd love to find a pedal for organ with leslie switch on it, as they do at Hammond's :

(see it at http://www.clickmusicshop.com/shop/moreinfo-Product_ID-70805-Category-864-Language-eng-Keyboard%20Expression%20pedal%20EXP%20100F.htm)

but price is prohibitive (173 euros !) and connector doesn't seem to fit in any non-hammond gear, and that's a shame. I'd love to find something ike this, because switching leslie on the same pedal seems so natural ! I tried it once on a Hammond, and it felt so goooood.

so, where can I find somthing like it ?
remember that on the Stage, swell input and rotor speed switch inputs are quite far away from each other (why ?) :

Some of the Ernie Ball pedals (there is a hookup diagram for the Ernie Balls somewhere in the manual - you'll need a Y type insert cable) have such a switch too. I think you might be able to use it for leslie switching.

Anyone using such a Pedal?

The Ernie Balls often wind up on eBay!

PS: Those pedals are built like a tank!

Hi!

I use the Boss FV-500L
- it can be used as an expression pedal (connected to the Stage with a stereo-jack-to-stereo-jack cable)
- it also has 2 in- & outputs in case you want to use it as a stereo volume-pedal
- you can adjust the range (minimum volume) and the feel of the pedal as well

I like it!

I use the Yamaha FC7. Very sturdy, rather heavy, seems indestructible. It has a nice feature: when you reach the 80% point (the % is adjustable), you need to apply a little more pressure to get to the 100% volume. This allows to have some volume "in reserve", they call it a "fortissimo function". Works nicely with the Nord Stage. It is a pleasure to use.

I also use a M-Audio pedal. It is much lighter, made of plastic, but works well too. It tends to slip around a bit, that doesn't happen with the FC7 since it is heavy and has rubber underneath.

The FC-7 looks good, while the Earnie Balls are unfortunately out of my price range.
But actually, I am looking for a rather small EXP pedal given that many including the FC-7 are rather huge and heavy.
I saw a Korg one the other day at a Triton Extreme which really looked nice and small footprinted...but cannot find it on the Net...
Plus the M-Audio one looks rather small on thomann, anyone experiences with the M-Audio or another SMALL pedal?

Moreover, I really would like to have a pedal combo includint one Control-Switch, Expression and Sustain, otherwise its quite a mess below the Stage...and given that I am usually playing while standing it is not straightforward to sort them out e.g. when switching from a Piano sound with sustain to an organ...playing all pedals with the right foot.

BTW, anyone uses the Roland EV-5 with the Stage? Heard that it causes problems with non-Roland gear in that one might not get the whole range of values?? Or is the "fortissimo" Feature of the FP-7 and others worth going for one of them??
I agree would be nice to have a combined pedal with the Leslie switch, or even a Half moon type of switch, but seems difficult.. J

Hi Johannes,
I'm currently using a Roland EV-5 with my Stage. I haven't had any of the problems you describe, but the travel is to light for my clumpy big feet.

I've added a piece of foam to try to emulate the 20% push that Herman mentioned on the Yamaha FC7 pedal ealier in this thread, but I'm thinking of getting a different pedal with a heavier travel.
